The cost of this course to individual applicants is £2600-£3000. The manager, administrator and trustees are working very hard to seek financial support for this course especially as it is a proposed Government requirement that all counsellors should have level 4 if not level 5 qualification. It is our wish that Philippi Counsellors, who have already paid for level 2 and level 3 training and then have donated many hours of their time and skills to counselling Philippi clients, should be heavily subsidised for attending this course. At a MINIMUM, every counsellor will be asked to pay for their registration, which will be £150.
Please note you will have needed to have completed an ACC recognised foundation level (level 2) and intermediate (level 3) counselling course or equivalent before applying.
You will be asked to provide two referees, who can attest to your suitability to undergo further counselling training. You will also be asked to agree to police checks, if they have not already been done.

Course Details
This demanding course is set at academic level 4. It is a two year part-time course. (420 contact hours + private study) and addresses the question ‘How can I be more effective as a counsellor?’
It is suitable for those:
- Already counselling at practitioner level in a supervised agency setting.
- With a minimum training in counselling skills and theory at Level 3, 150 hours of guided learning.
- Working towards taking up counselling at a professional level and who are working towards professional accreditation.
Previous training must have been on a substantive and systematic programme of counselling theory and skills development.
Learners are required to attend for a minimum of 80% of the course hours.
The Advanced Level Counselling Course builds on previous skills and theory of the Intermediate and Introductory course with more in depth work, but the emphasis is on the application of those skills and theories in a professional and service framework and on more contemporary ideas and developments in the field. On completion the learner will have the necessary understanding, skills and attitudes to underpin work in a professional setting in the field of counselling, as it is practiced today
The full training programme of the Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced Course will have provided a total of 600 guided learning hours of applied counselling theory, skills work and self development as currently required by professional bodies as the training component for accreditation.
Units to be studied:
- Analysis and Evaluation of Practice and Outcomes
- Applying counselling to the Human Condition
- Continued Professional Practice
- Eclectic Practice and Integration
- Further Action – centred and Solution Focused Approaches
- Further Cognitive – based Therapy
- Further Person – centred Therapy
- Professional, Ethical & Legal Practice
- Personal Development
- Current issues in Counselling Practice and Research
- Using Supervision & other Support Systems.
The course is a demanding one and is designed to stretch and challenge in all areas i.e. physically, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually.
The core model taught is the Philippi Model; an amalgamation of the Trust’s own work on the Beatitudes and Carkhuff’s Core Conditions of Counselling. A working knowledge of this model is given in the Intermediate Course. This course provides an opportunity to study the model in greater depth, compare other models and look at practical applications to specific problems. In addition to attending and taking part in the training sessions you will need to satisfactorily complete reading, journal and a leaning portfolio with relevant evidence of assignments for each study unit. Tutorial is offered as an opportunity to discuss any problems or difficulties with the course. The course has a high proportion of skills based work including the use of audio and video tapes. Skills groups will provide opportunities for observation, practice and feedback as well as discussion and review.
Personal development groups will give opportunities for students to grow in awareness as individuals and the effect they have on those around them by their behaviour, attitudes and psychology, as well as how they have been affected by their environment and the world within which they live. These groups will also help students to value and accept themselves and help them find ways in which they meet their own needs for personal support and growth, appropriate for themselves as counsellors in training.
You will also need to show you have experience of being in the client role outside the opportunities provided on the course.
In your application/interview you will need to demonstrate:
- Ability to cope with intellectual, academic and emotional demands of the course.
- Maturity and stability, self-awareness and the ability to make use of and reflect on life experience.
- An ability to be self critical and work with feedback (both positive and negative).
- Some awareness of the nature of prejudice.
- That your own personal therapy and growth are not primary reasons for undertaking the course.
If you have not done a previous Philippi Course, there will be opportunity for pre-course work. This course provides access to higher levels of training through Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL).
