Dear Friends & Supporters

Counselling: Last year was quieter for counselling, with 82 referrals, in comparison with 97 in 2011 and 122 in 2010. However, around 950 hours of counselling hours were delivered, an increase of 150 hours on 2011. Around 350 hours of supervision were delivered, which has increased considerably, due to the greater number of counsellors. The Primary Care Mental Health and Wellbeing Service continue to be extremely busy and we are still getting some new clients from GPs and Adult Mental Health. However, our range of referrals does seem to be coming from a wider source, including our website. Thanks go to our counsellors; Margaret, Amanda, Fiona, Liz, Sue, Christine, Emma, Annabel, Jane, Julie, Janet and Sarah, Colin, Nigel, Tom and Greg and our supervisors; Margaret, Maura and Brian, who all continue to give their time and skills. We have been joined by Carmel and Jo, who, like Greg, are doing a placement with us and we welcome these new counsellors to our team. We have been able to allocate clients to counsellors, without having a waiting list, although that position may change soon.

Administration: Rosalind is working in the office and Lucy is looking after the designated mobile telephone. We are grateful to have their help.

Training courses: The Advanced Counselling Course, level 4, (equivalent to a Diploma), is officially in the second year now, as it will finish next February. It is going well, with plenty of work to keep us busy and time is passing alarmingly quickly.

Listening and Responding 8 hour course is being held on Monday 15th and 22nd April from 9.30am until 1pm at St Andrew’s Church Barn.
PLEASE call Margaret on 254633 if you are interested in attending.

Fundraising: We are still hoping to fully fund the cost of the level 4 course. Please help us by filling in the Community Matters forms in Waitrose (which raised about £250 for us in July).

Rosalind is organising a Philippi quiz night for Friday 24th May, poster and details to be circulated shortly.

We are very grateful to Collins Stewart and the Soroptomists who generously sponsored my Supervisor’s Course, which started in February and continues at monthly intervals until June.

AGM Wednesday 24th April at 6pm in the Reading Room at Les Cotils.
Please let us know if you would like to join us for a meal afterwards and we will send you the menu. The cost is likely to be £14.95, with tea or coffee extra. Please call the office on 230745 or email philippi.g@cwgsy.net

Many thanks
Sarah

Dear Friends & Supporters

Counselling: This year has not been quite such a busy one for counselling, but extremely busy with training. So far we have had 75 new referrals. The Primary Care Mental Health and Wellbeing Service continues to take many of the referrals from GPs. Thanks go to our counsellors; Margaret, Amanda, Fiona, Liz, Sue, Christine, Emma, Nigel and Tom, Annabel, Jane and Sarah and our supervisors; Margaret, Maura and Brian, who continue to give their time and skills. Brian, Elizabeth and Janet have been helping with personal therapy for students, together with Felicity and Gillian from outside of Philippi. Helen and Pat have been taking a break for family reasons. During the year we welcomed Colin who trained in Ireland and recently Greg, who is training in London. We have been able to allocate clients to counsellors, without having a waiting list until recently.

Administration: Rosalind had her baby, Austin, in June and has recently returned from maternity leave. It is good to have her back.

Training courses: In April 2012, we started the Advanced Counselling Course, level 4, (equivalent to a Diploma), which will run for 2 years. The purpose of this is to upgrade our training and professional standards to fulfil proposed governmental requirements for counselling. Nine of our counsellors started the course and we were soon joined by Julie, who is a life-coach. The course is a big commitment for us all, especially Margaret who is doing most of the training. Unfortunately, one student has decided not to continue.

Margaret ran an 8 hour Listening and Responding course and is currently running another Pastoral Skills course, which will finish in January.

Fundraising: We are still hoping to fully fund the cost of the level 4 course and have had a couple of donations, for which we are very grateful. Please help us by filling in the Community Matters form in Waitrose, which raised about £250 for us in July.

We wish you all a peaceful Christmas and a healthy New Year.

Many thanks

Sarah

PS. Please accept my apologies for not adding this before Christmas! Spring is on its way!

Dear Friends & Supporters

Counselling: Last year was a busy one for counselling and training. We had 97 new referrals, compared with 122 in 2010. Just over 800 hundred hours of counselling were delivered to new and returning clients. Some of them have been coming for a few years, due to their severe damage. The introduction of the Primary Care Service in September has reduced our referrals from GPs in the last four months. There were also 158 hours of supervision delivered during the year, the lion share having been done by Margaret. This highlights the need for more supervisors to be trained, especially as Margaret & Maura have a full workload and hope to be retiring before too long.

Thanks go to our counsellors; Margaret, Amanda, Fiona, Helen, Janet, Liz, Pat, Sue and Sarah and our supervisors; Margaret, Maura and Brian, who continue to give their time and skills. The level 3 course finished in January, and we welcome Christine, Emma, Felisa, Nigel and Tom, who are joining our team of counsellors. We also welcome Elizabeth and Jane, who trained elsewhere. This means that we will be able to reduce our waiting list over the next few weeks, which is good.

Administration: Rosalind has been kept busy in the office and is expecting a baby in June. She will be on maternity leave until September and we wish her well.

AGM Wednesday 14thMarch at 6pm in the Reading Room at Les Cotils

If you would like to stay & join us for a meal afterwards, then please let us know and we will send you the menu to order. The cost is £13.

Training courses: In April 2012, we plan to start an Advanced Counselling Course, level 4, (equivalent to a Diploma), which will run for 2 years. The purpose of this is to upgrade our training and professional standards to fulfil proposed governmental requirements for counselling. There are about 10 of our counsellors who are hoping to start the course. Margaret is planning to do the majority of teaching, which will be an enormous task and we are immensely grateful to her.

There is also an 8 hour Listening and Responding course which is suitable for both secular and church communities. It has proved to be of use to managers of organisations as well as church study groups. All fees and times are negotiable and fees are donated to Philippi for training and the maintenance of the service.

Quiet Day : November 19th 2011

Unfortunately, it had to be cancelled due to lack of support, much to the distress of those who had signed up.

Fundraising

We are still hoping to fully fund the cost of the level 4 course and have had a few donations, for which we are extremely grateful. There is also the cost of the supervisor’s course to be funded.

Unfortunately, because we are a faith-based organisation and not a high profile, mainstream charity, we do not seem to fit the criteria for many charitable works, despite the obvious need for counselling across the board, from professionals to the unemployed. Our clients come from churches and the community and we provide an accessible service, which complements existing provision. Therefore, the directors feel that the next stage is to approach the churches on the island to ask for their support. If you know of anyone who might be able to help in some way, then we would be delighted to hear from them. Small things all help. For example, please fill in the Community Matters form in Waitrose.

Website

Our new website is operative, please have a look at it;

Dear Friends & Supporters

Counselling: This year is continuing to be a busy one for counselling and training. We have had 80 new referrals so far, compared with 98 at this time last year. At present, there is a short waiting list of about 6 people. Thanks go to our counsellors; Margaret, Amanda, Fiona, Helen, Janet, Liz, Pat and Sarah and our supervisors; Margaret, Maura and Brian, who continue to give their time and skills.

Some of our counsellors have had their own challenges of illness, work issues and moving house to overcome. Sue, who had answered our designated telephone line since the beginning of Philippi Guernsey, has decided to relinquish it after 7 years of dedicated service. We appreciate and thank Sue for her valuable contribution over the years and extend her our best wishes for the future. The telephone line will now be answered by the manager.

Administration: Rosalind has been kept occupied with a wide variety of tasks, which is a great help to us.

Training courses: An Initial Course, level 2, ran from the end of January, taking place over 4 weekends through until March. The Intermediate Course, level 3, started in May, with 13 students and will finish in January. A good number of students attended the Initial Course and most have continued on to the Intermediate Course, together with others. Unfortunately, several have withdrawn for various reasons.

In April 2012, we plan to start a Diploma Course, level 4, which will run for 2 years, in order to upgrade our training and professional standards to fulfil proposed governmental requirements for counselling.

Continuing Professional Development Programme 2011

FEBRUARY Friday 18th & Saturday 19th

Frank Wills, from Bristol University, came to teach CBT for Depression: Behavioural Activation, Mindfulness and Self-Compassionate Thinking.

MAY Friday 13th & Saturday 14th

Linda Van Peborgh brought a colleague, Jonquil Hinds, and together they led a workshop entitled ‘Loving is Tough’.

JUNE Friday 24th & Saturday 25th

Roger and Christine Day demonstrated adult Sand Tray Work and we had a chance to experiment for ourselves!

ALL these days were excellent, giving us a variety of theory, spiritual/emotional & practical topics to increase our experience and build our skills.

Thanks go to Margaret as our trainer and organiser of CPD.

November 19th: Quiet Day 10.00 to 4pm

Adrian Datta, our previous Chairman, will lead our reflections on the theme of Resting, Rejoicing and Remembering, based on the core passage of Philippians 4: 4-9. Please come and join us, bringing lunch, layers of clothing and a torch.

RSVP by Friday 11th November so that we know for refreshments and seating.

Fundraising

We have made personal approaches to an increased number of companies who may be sympathetic to the work of Philippi, in order to continue to help fulfill our training requirements and fund the post of part-time secretary in the future. We are keen to heavily subsidise the Diploma course, as all our counsellors have paid for their own training to date and give their time and skills. We appreciate that in the current economic climate, there are less funds available for charitable causes, but we continue to be hopeful.

Margaret has just taught a Listening and Responding Course, over 2 half days for ARC (Asset Risk Consultants) in return for a good sponsorship fee.

We are looking for a sponsor to design and maintain a website for us, if you know anyone with some time and these skills, who may be interested.

EVENTS

On Saturday May 21st, we celebrated 10 years since Malcolm Worsley came to Guernsey and taught the first Philippi course and he and Jennifer came over for the weekend. About 35 people joined us for a buffet lunch at Les Cotils and it was lovely to meet up with old friends.

In October, Philippi Germany are hosting a Philippi Worldwide conference, for representatives of Philippi UK, Guernsey, South Africa, Namibia, Belgium and USA to join together and learn more about the work of each branch.

We do value your continued interest and prayer support.

We are still reviewing our mailing list and would like to continue to give you the opportunity to have the Newsletters emailed or still posted to you or your name taken off the list. Thank you if you replied last time.

Counselling: Last year was a busy one for counselling and training. We had 122 new referrals, just a few less than 2009 and just over 700 sessions of counselling were delivered, 200 less than 2009. Currently there is a 2 – 3 month waiting list of about a dozen people. Thanks go to our counsellors; Margaret, Janet, Amanda, Magdalena, Helen, Liz, Lucy, Pat and Sarah and our supervisors; Margaret, Maura, Jenny and Brian who continue to give their time and skills.

Unfortunately, it has been a difficult year for many of our counsellors. Thankfully, Margaret has recovered well from her two episodes of surgery, which have been successful. Others are or have been unwell or had family concerns. Magdalena expects her first baby soon and we wish her well. We are pleased to welcome Fiona and her family to the island and look forward to Fiona’s participation with us.
